Usage Rights

Understanding how long brands can use your content after a contract is completed.

What are Usage Rights?

Usage rights define how long a brand can use the deliverables (content) you create for them after the contract is completed. This is an important aspect of creator-brand agreements that protects both parties.

When you create content for a brand, you're granting them the right to use that content for commercial purposes. Usage rights determine the duration of this permission.

Perpetual (No Expiry)

The brand can use the content forever without any time restrictions. This is the default option.

Limited Duration

The brand can only use the content for a specific period (e.g., 3, 6, 12, or 24 months) after contract completion.

For Creators

As a creator, you have control over the usage rights for your content. You can set usage rights when creating service packages or adjust them on individual contracts before submitting the contract for approval.

How to Set Usage Rights

  1. 1Set default usage rights on your service packages in Settings → Packages. This will apply to all new contracts using that package.
  2. 2You can also adjust usage rights on individual contracts at any time before submitting the contract for approval. Go to the contract page and find the Usage Rights section.
  3. 3Once you submit the contract for approval, usage rights are locked and cannot be changed.

Important: Usage rights cannot be changed after you submit the contract for approval. Make sure you've set the desired usage rights before requesting completion.

Tips for Creators

  • Consider charging higher rates for perpetual usage rights, as the brand gets unlimited use of your content.
  • Limited usage rights (e.g., 6 months) can be a good option if you want to retain long-term control over your content.
  • Set your default usage rights in your packages to save time on individual contracts.
  • Clearly communicate usage rights terms to brands before accepting contracts.

For Brands

Usage rights are set by the creator and cannot be changed by brands. You can view the usage rights terms on any contract page, but only creators can modify them.

What Happens When Usage Rights Expire

  • You will receive an email notification 30 days before your usage rights expire.
  • After expiry, you should stop using the content for commercial purposes.
  • To continue using the content, contact the creator to negotiate extended usage rights.

Tips for Brands

  • Review the usage rights before funding a contract to ensure they meet your campaign needs.
  • For long-term campaigns, prefer contracts with perpetual usage rights.
  • Set calendar reminders for expiry dates to ensure compliance.
  • Keep deliverables archived for reference even after usage rights expire.
